If the cables are wire bound I would soak them in diesel fuel for a week or two and see if you can pull the inner wire out. Sometimes that is emough. Others use vinegar if there is rust on them. If they're kinked scrap them. Graphite or anything that works on locks keeps them free. Replacements are not too expensive so don't waste much time on them.
