I think other than cork gasket applications, the torque for size and grade principle can be applied. I wouldn't use it on the mentioned covers though (which was the original subject).
Hotrod is right about the tightening of the bolts on these and Tim makes a really good point about cover deformity. Both tips well worth remembering for future rebuilds.
