You can run any engine on a test stand, no matter high much power they have as long as you don't load the crank. There is no torque being applied to the crank so the engine will set dead solid when running. The clutch and transmissions hold the engines back in the truck and cause them to torque over. I have been breaking in engines on test stands for years and never had one even jump and my buddy used to set them on a old tire and test run them in junkyards before purchasing them. They sound like high rpm race engines since the rev up so quickly.
For a simple cooling system, shove a garden hose in the water pump inlet and adjust the flow so water coming out the top hose is warm but not hot. I used the heater hose outlets on my 250 and adjusted the flow so water was about 160 coming during break-in.
