John’s method of carefully chipping off the loose stuff and Don’s WD-40 is what I’ve used on my ’50 firewall. The undercoat was a way up on the lower part of the firewall. http://www.pbase.com/dennygraham/image/116749957

WD-40 is mostly just kerosene so that will work just as well and it’s cheaper. You’ll use up a lot of rags but you won’t scratch up the paint if its good under the coating.
