Hy macgyver, as you said it sounds like an aftermarket control, I would think if it was made to replace the o.e.m. one then it would perform like the o.e.m. one. About the only way to test it would be to fire the truck up and see what happens when you try to shift the axle. It may not work, but then you could trace down what is actually not functioning.
