I'd use oil for installation, which does not evaporate and will cause the tape to expand somewhat permanently. Gasoline/lighter fluid/turpentine/kerosene/etc would be quite nice to assist in removal - both as suggested in original Shop Manuals (oil for installation and gas (volatile liquid) for removal).
