Whenever I use a voltage tester, I attach the wire with the clip to a good ground, and probe for voltage with the sharp, pokey end. This tells me the connection I have touched has voltage to it.
Using it with the clip to a power source will indicate the point probed has a path to ground. I don't think this is what you need to prove.
Have I misunderstood how you have the tester hooked up?
