Am I correct in thinking that as the thermostatic spring gets warm it softens and the counterweight pulls the valve open?
I reinstalled the spring as per your pics and was thinking that if the spring contracted when warm it would hold the valve closed.
As installed per your pictures, when I warm up the spring with a heat gun the valve opens. It closes fairly quickly (after approx. 1 min.) when I take the heat away.
Whatever, it's definately opening and closing. I'm just curious about how the spring works.
You are right about a piece of the old spring in the slot. In fact, it looks like two pieces side by side. Think I'll tackle that over the weekend.
