If you have a friend to help you, you can do a pretty simple visual exam. With the parking brake applied, have your friend lay down near the rig so he can see the drive train from front to back. At an idle, go from drive to reverse in a alternating fashion. Sometimes it's possible to see a center bearing flopping around, or a u-joint doing a death dance.
