One trick that will keep the gasket from dislodging as the pan is installed is to tie it to the pan through several bolt holes on each side with sewing thread. The thickness of the thread is irrelevant to the sealing process, and it can stay put as the pan is tightened. Adding a SMALL amount of RTV rubber sealer at the junction of the side rails and end gaskets helps prevent seep leaks there, too.
