Colin,
As 3B said, you should be able to "stab" that engine back on to the transmission.
It is alot easier with one person up top moving things up, down, and side-to-side, while the second person is below aligning the splines.
When I replaced my 216, we did it in this manner. I got lucky, and hit it on the first try.
The only problem I encountered was the alignment of the motor/tranny mounts. Once in place, I had to use a "come-along" to pull the engine forward so I could align the mounting holes.
