they normally run off a battery, not sure why testing them with a battery would be a problem, tho' it'd be best if you included a proper sized fuse in the power lead .... OTOH, a "thing that plugs in the wall" would be a power supply, quite like a battery charger, and if you've got an older style that doesn't need feedback from a battery, that'd work fine too
