I just went through this a bit on my truck. I replaced steering box bushings which helped, but I also tightened my lash adjustment a bit more than the manual called for. That helped quite a bit for steering wheel free play. Changing from the beat old bias ply tires I had to steel radials (used) made a HUGE difference. The truck no longer seeks the grooves/ruts in the road.
