Wasn't 90 Suburban still on the 73-87 style frame? If so, I would expect that there would still be width issues. He probably is saying 12" would have been better if he was measuring the stock wheelbase and didn't take into consideration putting the rear axle back the 1.5" it really needs to sit in the wheel wells.
