I would at least make up a gasket for under it, you can get bulk gasket material in a sheet at NAPA or any auto parts supplier, I wouldnt put it on metal to paint, it will eventually chip the paint if it doesnt when you tighten it up the first time, ya need a cushion between the paint and the ornament.
