I know what you are talking about. The round screw heads protrude through the side of the block and are visible from the outside. The next time that I am working on my truck I can have a better look. The oil pump itself is secured as above. The hexbolt comes in from the side and lodges on the drilled out portion of the body. the hexnut then is tightened down to lock the bolt in place.
