It's been many years since I've owned whitewalls (wide or skinny), but the only scuffing I ever encountered was caused by running into a curb. This is true of both black and whitewall tires. If scrubbing the tires on the ground had any effect on the white rubber sidewall, I would think power steering would be more of a problem since you can turn the tires with ease while standing still.
I love wide whites on the right vehicle, but they require a lot of effort to keep clean, and generally discolor (turning yellow) over time.
