I always have the bellhousing installed first, and I cut the heads off a couple bolts (I use old head bolts from a 235) and screw them into the bell hoousing. When you install the transmission the case of the trans slips over the bolts and will slide in exactly centered to the crankshaft pilot bearing (or bushing). Never have any trouble getting the transmission to go into place that way. I take a hacksaw and make slots in the headless bolts so they can be removed with a screwdriver. I have installed transmissions several times using this excellent advice, works like a charm.
