Wow! Sounds familiar... I had a Pinto throw a timing belt years ago. Took the bus, got some tools and parts and changed it on the side of the road. Not fun, but doable. I would think removing the fan and damper should let you get the cover off and check things. I'd be worried about metal bits in the oil... and all through the engine. Might want to at least drop the pan and check for teeth if the gears went. If the cam broke, you may need to tear it down and clean it out.
