I saw a tech article on a little later chevy truck... 67-72 where this fella put a tank under the bed and he hid the fuel door behind the side marker light... so it didn't stand out at all.
For the record I recently emailed a guy who was in a head on collision in a truck like ours... someone doing like 40-45 mph... totaled the truck, put him in the hospital for 11 months plus rehab... but he sold the gas tank to another guy for his project.
