The early splash-oil engines with hydraulics had some issues with the oil supply to the lifters being a bit on the marginal side, but I think the problem was more of lifter design than inadequate volume of oil. By the time the full-pressure engines with hydraulics became common, the lifters had gotten a redesign. Jerry
