I've never heard of the hydraulic-lifter engines having a special pump. What year are you dealing with? The early splash-oil engines with hydraulics had some issues with the oil supply to the lifters being a bit on the marginal side, but I think the problem was more of lifter design than inadequate volume of oil. By the time the full-pressure engines with hydraulics became common, the lifters had gotten a redesign.

the engine is a '54 235 with hydrolic lifeters origionaly installed in a powerglide car. i'm putting the engine in my '54 3600.

the reason i ask is because i believe the hydrolic lifters need 60 psi of oil preasure. while solid lifter engines just need 30 psi. i have not found listings for different oil pumps. so if there are not different pumps how do the two different achieve diffent oil pressures with the same pump?

It is true that in '53 there was a low pressure pump, and a high-pressure pump for the hydraulic lifter cars but the reason for the higher pressure was because the '53 'glide engine was the first of the full-pressure oilded 235's. In '54 only one pump was used for 235 all applications.

I do not think that high-pressure 235 engines with hydraulic lifters needed 60 psi oil pressure. The 1954 Powerglide oil gauge range was 0-60 and the oil-pump pressure-relief was set to about 45 psi (the same oil pump for all vehicles in 1954).

ok. so do both the solid lifter and hydrolic lifter engines, of '54 vintage, run the same oil psi? or is there a different oil pressure relief valve for each?

where is the oil pressure relief? is it attached to oil pressure sending unit? or built into the pump?

The same oil pump was used in all 1954 Chevrolet engines/vehicles and the same pump was used on the 1953 Powerglide-equipped engines (these were also high-pressure and had hydraulic lifters).

The pressure relief valve is in the oil pump.

ok. that makes things easy. somewhere along the way i picked up some misinformation; that the powerglide/hydrolic lifter engines used/required greater oil pressure.

i didt want to install the wrong oil pump drop the motor in and find out i didnt have enough psi to operate the lifters.

thank you for the information.
