Yes you can take the unit out of the tank on mine I had to set the hgt. of the unit in the tank so it was 3/8 of an inch higher than center and cut the arm so it was a little shorter that is what the instructions told me to do than I moved the arm up and down and looked at the gauge to make sure it was reading right.
