You should adjust the rods so that you can pull forward & back in neutral without without catching. You may have it mounted too close or too far back from the shift lever. There is a little room for adjustment in the coupler that mounts the shafts together. It's all a matter of getting the correct adjustments. Carters has a good tech. adviser if you can't get it right.
