I just found something interesting in the Truck Cumulative Index for service literature for 1951:
"216 engine to use the 235 cylinder block and cylinder head castings"
Maybe this explains some of the mystery. This was the era when they made 216s with the short side cover. The cylinder head was different from the previous version and different again from the 1953 version.
