no tool is needed to remove the shifter on my SM420, just push down slightly on the "tin cover" and rotate it about 1/2" counter clock wise, it just pops right up then.
to reinstall it, just line up the pins with the slot, push it down slightly & rotate it clock wise.
it works for me.
