davy, DMV may not accept your replacement data plate, CHP will assign you one of their approved plates with their number. If you have the title and registration you may not have to show DMV anything just pay the fee. If you're truck is not currently registered you may then have to get it inspected, fill out piles of forms etc.
One of my trucks had no paper work at all,I got forms from DMV had a police officer verify the numbers and sign the paper work. I was directed to the local CHP office and they said as long as an officer had signed it off I was done. But, everyone who goes through this nonsence comes away with a completely different story. This all depends on the person you get at dmv, mostly they just want you to get out of their face, so they hand you a pile of papers. Also if you are a AAA member, they may be able to help solve the paper work fiasco.
