As I understand it the best donor vehicle is an S-10 (that's where I got mine) to put the shifter in approximately the right place, anything after 88 is world class, but will have electronic speedo hookup, try to get one that was originally behind a 6 cylinder as the gear set will be a little better, and yes...I'm pretty sure you can change the tail housing to an older mechanical speedo drive, but the tail shaft for the electronic is different than the mechanical so will require some modification.

Having said all that I put a non world class 88 T-5 from a 4 cylinder S-10 in my '63 behind a 230 cid and it worked out fine until I blew out reverse gear today. If I had it to do over again I would either do exactly as I did or try to pick up a newer tranny with the electronic drive and change my speedo to match...I need new gauges anyway.
