Think it's fixed!! I put two pieces of cork in the holes where the heat riser used to be just to see what it what do and drove it @20 minutes and no backfire. Then the corks burnt out and it started again. must have been the exhaust leak (Baldy). Now I'll rig something to patch it for good. Thanks for all the help.
