I would take a serious look at the entire ignition system, including the spark plug wires.

Older resistive wires (carbon core) can develop air gaps. The air gaps act as a capacitor and require a miniscule (but finite) amount of time to charge, thus delaying the spark through a defective wire. This can cause an explosion with the intake valve open on the next sequence, thus popping through the carb.
