well it looks like everyone got it right. the engine number is b 2281 86409. and the valve cover has the GMC on it as well as the bolts through the top. and the owners book does list it as a 228 for the smallest size available. so i guess that only getting some info on something can be as bad as no info.thanks for the help everyone. now on to figuring out the voltage it was last run on.
