1) I'd guess that you may pinch the tube-end and not worry about what seeps past the pinch - the tubes were often pinched a little, perhaps to increase oil pressure?
2) When the flat side is down (on the bottom) are the holes on the top? I think the holes on the shafts are supposed to be on the top.
