I am going out on a limb as usual, but it is probably pretty straightforward how the shifter mounts to the transmission. If it's a four speed there must be three shifter arms and three control rods. If the shift pattern is a conventional "H" and reverse is where it is suppose to be, then the arms will go only one way..if the arms go only one way, the control rods will only go one way.
If anything is where it isn't suppose to be, the gear selection will be incorrect. Every adjustment is made from the neutral gate. The arms and rods are installed with the tranny in neutral. Then, pulling the shifter back and forth through the gate, everything is fine tuned until this movement is completely free. If you put the reverse arm in upside down, you will know it pronto. Flip it over.
