You say that you don't have a dwell meter and set the points at .018". Ok, probably. I didn't hear you say anything about checking the timing. This isn't an option. Anytime you change/adjust or do anything to the points, you have to check and probably reset the timing. If you think you can bolt a Pertronix unit in there and all your problems will be solved. BACK AWAY FROM THE TRUCK. You still need a timing light.
