I hope that guy is your ex-mechanic! With an attitude like that, he definitely doesn't need to be working on your truck!
If it's a Quadrajet, it will probably have a manifold-mounted choke. If there's a small rectangular depression on the passenger's side of the intake, that's where the choke coil goes. A piece of round rod with a couple of 90 degree bends in it attaches the coil to the choke linkage on the carb. There are about six consecutive adjustments to be made after the choke coil is connected, from fast idle to unloader, to either one or two vacuum break adjustments to make sure the engine doesn't choke itself to death after it gets going in really cold weather, or over-rev as it warms up.
My first exposure to the Q-jet was in 1966, when I went to a Rochester factory school. It was a brand new carb then, only installed on a few engines. For the next 25 years, it was GM's main line 4-barrel. Be sure you've got the right part number carb for the engine.
