Thanks for the offer, 51Jimmy, but I had Grandpa have a look at it, and he set me straight (and made fun of me a little...)
The clevis was bolted to the transmission, so I figured that the handle mounted inbetween the prongs...
Whoops.
I'm gonna get in there with a pair of vice grips and squeeze it together enough to mount it correctly.
