Huck brakes work fine if they are adjusted properly and maintained. You could upgrade to Bendix front brakes which came out in '53 on medium duty trucks. Thats what I did on my '52 3600. They are 12" vs the Hucks which were 11". Parts are much easier to find and it would be pretty much a bolt in job.
