I getting ready to remove the old babbit pounder from my 1940 GMC and replace it with a fresh 235. I got the radiator out last night, then removed the 4 bolts holding the fan to the waterpump pulley. The fan blades would not come off the pulley. There seems to be a steel ring pressed onto the shaft that is locking the blades onto the shaft.

How do I get the blades off - does this ring need to be cut off some how? There doesn't seem to be anyway to pull it off.

Ideas???
