The trick way to build a 302 is to use an early 327 block with the small-diameter main bearings, and use a steel 283 crankshaft. The 327 already has a 4" bore, so cylinder wall thickness isn't a factor, and the 3" stroke 283 crank will spin up to 8,000 RPM all day without problems, as long as it's balanced properly.

If you want a real screamer, get King's crankshafts to build you a 38-lb. lightweight shaft (stock shaft weighs 55 lbs.) and put a set of Nascar-specification Honda rods with it. The rod journal size is less than 2" diameter, and with the right set of pistons, you'll have a 9,000+ RPM engine. The downside- - - -the rotating assembly costs over $5,000.00.
