After reading Davidn's article, I decided to tear apart the lower block myself
. I think I can, I think I can. In one afternoon, I got the pan off, the oil pump out, and the harmonic balancer and timing gear cover off. Stay tuned. I'm sure I'll be back begging for help.
Meanwhile, the cylinder head came back from the engine shop today. It looks so pretty I think I want to eat breakfast off it in the morning. I can almost hear that engine purr!
