The shim or shims on top of the steering knuckle are used to adjust the vertical play. It should not exceed .005" . Generally you can feel play at about .005" between two parts but less than this you can't. If the play or clearance is too large, the bottom bearing will be damaged by the pounding that will occur. The bearing races are very hard and brittle.
