The Front end is pretty solid on those trucks. The only reason you would want to change the front end would be for disc brakes which can be bought in the aftermarket for the original front end. Dual master cylinder if you keep the drums. Or power drums (a booster from a 67-70 chev). You might want to swap out the rearend for one with a lower gear ratio depending on what you have now. My 64 Chev has 4.10 gears in the back which limits my speed on the highway...might be good for your son
