Tim...I had a similar experience a few years ago,are your wheels powder coated by any chance?
If so,I would suggest you try and remove the coating at the lug nut seats and as others suggest torque the bolts evenly.
I'm not sure what lb/ft you should use but maybe someone else will chime in with the correct torque settings.
Thankfully neither you or your precious 'bolt were seriously injured!
