I also thought as you did regarding what was being asked.
I now think, however, that David is referring to the brace attached to the underside of the hood, near the rear of the hood. Most of my hoods had some sort material, as described by Stuart. One of my hoods had a very creative and innovative former owner and between that brace and the hood were strips of 1/8" masonite (and the gooey/rubber-like material).
