Is this on your '51 pickup? On my old truck there was a piece of rubber mashed in there from factory (I assume). Over the years it has turned to black goo.
I don't know if this material was some type of bonding tar or just a thing piece of material to keep chafing and squeaking down. I'm not much help...maybe the correct answer will be along soon.
