i am nearly sure its a chev motor as i have a 235 that was identified with help from you guys on this forum
235 i since have found out is a hi toque engine has 235 stamped on the sump, small plugs in the head 1/8 rings ,flat top pistons 3 9/16 bore etc (any more info about the small spark plug heads would be nice to know )
This newer engine i have purchased still has the same high side cover near the plugs ,large plugs , 2 bolts to hold tappet cover on a lot more casting ribs on the manifold side of the block

Has the head been pulled from the "new" engine to see what its bore and stroke are? All of the "old" casting numbers on the "new" engine seem to to indicate no later than an early 1940s engine. However, I do not recall seeing a 216 or 235 with so many ribs on the manifold side of the engine.
The Chevrolet
1929-1954 Master Parts Manual indicates that the 1940 and earlier 216s had the 14 mm spark plugs, the 1941-1948 216s and 235s had the smaller 10 mm plugs, and the 1949 and later 216s had 14 mm plugs again.
