I haven't checked this thread for a while. What you describe can be eliminated by using what they call high build primer these days. In my day it was primer surfacer. As noted above, after shooting a heavy coat & letting it dry, block sand the area until the high spots show. Add more primer & a light dusting of a contrasting color spray paint to use as a guide coat. When you can block sand the guide coat off without exposing the high spots, your filler will not show through.
