i have a 54/3100/235 that i just recently overhauled, 435 miles on it. i am getting 12 mpg with fenton headers, dual rochesters and a t-5 with a 2.73 ring and pinion out of a nova. also i have a mini hei distributor. the lower gear will help. do a search and you will get a lot of different opinions of what will help. i having my carbs overhauled at this moment, one was new and the other is one that i overhualed years ago. i am hoping mine will get up into the 15 to 20 as the engine breaks in. i check years ago the mileage before i did all the work i have done and i got 12.5 i was hoping the upgrades would improve it. good luck. ron btw go the post in engine and drive line about holley weber disappointment.
