Be sure the stator stays with the rear housing, to avoid damaging the 3 stator leads that connect to the rectifier. It's simpler to remove the stator and rear housing all the way, and reset the brushes into their holders. Retain the brushes with a straightened-out paper clip through the hole in the brush housing for that purpose, and let the wire stick out the hole in the back of the housing. Assemble the alternator in whatever position you choose, and pull the wire out the back. Mission accomplished!
