That should be fine. I asked about a Pertronix and everyone who responded said good things about them, so do that, get a new switch and coil, rewire it like it is supposed to be, and report back. You might even get some new wiring and replace the stuff you have on it now, just to eliminate the chance of melting your $90 pertronix.
